In 1994, photographer Kenro Izu witnessed a
7-year-old girl die because her father could not afford the $2 cost of her medicine.
Deeply troubled by what he had seen, Kenro founded Friends Without A Border.
He wanted a place for children to go for free and compassionate care, hospitals where "every child should be treated as if it was your own."
Friends Without A Border built two free pediatric teaching hospitals in Southeast Asia—
Angkor Hospital for Children (now under local management) and Lao Friends Hospital for Children.
Today, Lao Friends Hospital for Children is the only provider of free, high-quality healthcare for the children of northern Laos in Luang Prabang Province.
