Singapore Surgeons from ‘MyLaoSMILE’ Return for the 5th time to LFHC for Cleft Lip and Palate and Burns Surgery

A team of surgeons and healthcare professionals from MyLaoSMILE, a charitable organisation based in Singapore returned to Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) on 6-11 February 2025. This marks their fifth visit since 2023, during which they’ve operated on 102 patients and 26 more transformative surgeries on this recent trip.

Their mission is to provide free, cleft lip and palate and corrective burn surgeries to children in need to families who otherwise would not be able to afford these types of surgeries. The impact of these surgeries is quite profound. Without intervention, it can lead to lifelong health and social issues. With timely surgical correction, many of these challenges can be overcome. Not only does it restore physical appearances but also significantly enhances the overall quality of life for these young patients and their families.

For a closer look at the transformative work being done, watch this video highlighting their work and mission at LFHC:

Many families from rural regions of Laos came all the way to Luang Prabang to benefit from this opportunity, thanks to the work of our Outreach team, we were able to spread the word even to the most remote areas in Laos.

One such family, travelled an arduous three day journey to reach LFHC, determined to seek help for their child. Their journey involved a two-day walk through rough roads, hitching a ride from a banana truck while finding overnight shelters in schools. When they arrived in Luang Prabang town, they just had enough money to take a tuktuk to LFHC. They arrived at 8:30 pm, just when the Singapore team was just about to wrap up. Touched by this family’s determination, the surgeons promptly assessed the child and ensured they were scheduled for a surgery.

As MyLaoSMILE continues its mission, the ripple effects of their work extend beyond immediate medical relief, it offers hope. Their efforts not only address physical ailments but also contribute to the emotional and social well-being of the children, empowering them to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Thank you my LaoSMILE. See you again on your next visit!
