As runners sprinted along narrow shady roads, past golden temples, toward the finish line of the Luang Prabang Half Marathon, a clear winner had already been declared: the Laotian children.
All the proceeds from the half marathon on October 22 were dedicated to the Lao Friends Hospital for Children.
We are excited to announce that we raised over $137,000 to help support LFHC, almost double the amount raised in 2016.
The focus of this year’s race was to raise awareness about the hospital, therefore the race name was changed to “Run for Children: Luang Prabang.”
This year we had a record-breaking turnout of nearly 1,200 participants from 42 countries, a 75 percent increase from last year and registration spots sold out for the first time ever. The event marked LFHC’s second year of playing host to the half marathon, which is growing every year.
About 45 percent of the participants were Lao nationals — proof that the race is not just an international event for tourists but also a community event. Apart from Laos, the top countries represented by runners were Thailand, Malaysia and Great Britain.
The event attracted an outstanding number of 34 sponsors, including Tigerhead Water, the Presenting Sponsor, Platinum Sponsors Air Asia and SilkAir, and Gold Sponsors: Bangkok Air, Lao Air and Brooks.
We would also like to thank sponsors Amantaka, Azerai, Sofitel, 3Nagas and the Bankok Symphony Orchestra for its performances at the inaugural Lao Friends Gala Dinner and the Azerai hotel.
Run for Children: Luang Prabang Half Marathon is not only a charity race for the hospital but it is a community event which brings the people of Luang Prabang together. Thank-you to all the sponsors, runners and volunteers for making this race a possibility!
